Jim Tonkowich
Speaking

Over the past thirty-five or more years, I have spoken to audiences including churches, youth groups, mens groups, and Sunday school classes. Over the past few years these have included McLean Presbyterian Church, Harvester Presbyterian Church, The Heritage Foundation, Family Research Council, the Pentagon, Chuck Colson’s “Centurions Program”, The College of William & Mary, Thomas Aquinas College, InterVarsity Graduate Christian Fellowship, and other venues.

While I have addressed a wide variety of topics, my focus is on two broad areas: the Christian Heart (spirituality) and the Christian Mind (worldview).

The Christian Heart

  • Prayer: Experts and Experiments. We grow in prayer as we learn from prayerful men and women of the past and as we are willing to try new ways to pray.
  • Praying the Psalms. For generations the Psalms have been the Church’s prayer book. The power of the prayers inspired by God needs to be rediscovered today.
  • What I’ve Learned about God Through Prayer. Personal reflections on the place of prayer in Christian growth.
  • Always Keeping Score.  How the Gospel protects us from our natural, unhappy bent toward comparing ourselves to others.
  • Help My Unbelief.  On battling the three great enemies of spiritual growth: “the world, the flesh, and the Devil.”
  • Well, God, I Did It Again.  Our besetting sins (those sins we repeat over and over again) are the result of fear. Christ is the antidote for that fear.
  • What Happened to All Your Joy?  Good news to those who feel in the doldrums of the Christian life. Joy can be ours every day.
  • Marking Time with the Church.  The Church seasons, beginning with Advent frees us to live through the year with a distinctly Christian rhythm.

The Christian Mind
  • The Christian Mind: Yours, Mine, and “Hours.”  On the enormous need to think Christianly about all of life.
  • Picking Up the Pieces.  The building blocks for a Christian worldview.
  • Heaven is Not My Home.  How the biblical doctrine of Christ’s return influences our work and vocation every day.
  • Worldview in the Bible.  Worldview is not some add-on to the Christian life, an accessory for those interested. Worldview is implicit in the Bible from Genesis to Revelations.
  • Thoughts on Being Human.  The question of what it mean to be human is central to our understanding of marriage, family, sexuality, human rights, biotechnology, poverty, and just about any other public or private issue you can name.
  • Image is Everything. An examination of how the fact that human are made in the image of God impacts our understanding of bioethics and life issues.
  • Religion and the Federal State.  Making sense of religious freedom and the place of faith in the public square.
  • Religious Liberty in an Age of Toleration.  Religious toleration is not religious liberty, something that must be understood and defended overseas and at home.
